Silver Bullets and Plastic Molds
“You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality.”
This quote by Walt Disney I think speaks volumes about creating positive experiences. It’s not essentially a system, marketing, or locale that creates the experience, it is all about people first.
Let’s take the attraction at the Magic Kingdom, Space...

Paravel has just wrapped up an exciting secret project with three of the web’s most talented designers: Jason Santa Maria, Frank Chimero, and Naz Hamid. These designs are epic, like 18,123px epic. Working with these guys was a complete joy. There were a few fun development challenges and – as you might expect from these gentlemen – a lot of fancy typography work in the delivered PSDs.
Input Output →
Any business, public or private, has an input/output paradigm. You give a clerk $2, you get a soda. You enter a number in a phone, you get some sort of response on the other end. You go to Google and enter a search term, you get search results. Even such vital things as hospitals work this way. It’s this constant balancing act between give and take.

Many years ago I was working on a design project with an e-commerce company who was selling electronics on the Web. The design team was working on a large redesign of their web site in response to their latest thinking on what works best for selling their products. At one point I noticed they were making several changes to their web site that reminded me of something I had seen before. So I asked,...

My Tumblr Redesign
I’m not really sure why it has taken me this long to update and redesign my tumblr, but obviously I have done it. It is written in HTML5 and with some CSS3. I also was able to write all of the CSS in under 80 lines. I made use of Nicole Sullivan’s awesome media object which was used by Facebook to save thousands of lines of CSS. Anyways, I’m still not completely done...

Webkit, Fixed PNGs and Scrolling = :(
For the past week or so I have come to the conclusion that there is large bug in the webkit rendering engine when it comes to setting a fixed background image on the body of a page.
The page become really jittery when scrolling. It seems webkit doesn’t like using fixed PNGs for backgrounds. Below is a video showing the problem.
I also tested removing webkit specific properties like...

RE: Inventing Email
Lets face it, email sucks as it is known today. While valiant efforts are being made by Google to re-invent online communication, the fact remains that there is a large user base of desktop based email clients. The problem with email is that it’s very top down, meaning that forces it’s self on you. It’s not natural. Emails get lost because of this.
Without flagging or...
Cognition
Experiences on the web should be easier not harder. Just because something is a big investment of time or money doesn’t mean the exchange of information or money should be a difficult one. The experience should be fluid like breathing and not sporadic like a seizure. Reinsurance and ease builds trust, trust leads to commitment.

An Event Apart
I’m pretty excited for the Chicago An Event Apart web design conference. It shall be my first “business” trip and it’s to one of my favorite cities. I have some pretty high expectations for the event seeing that some of the biggest names and innovators in web design will be speaking.
Haven’t been to downtown Chicago since 2006, when I was driving there 3 weekends...

Apartment
Well I have been sitting in my apartment pretty much all day because it is like -5 degrees outside. I am trying to brainstorm some ideas for prototypes for a clients website. I most likely will come up with something BRILLANT tomorrow.
